the basics
Browser: the program used to run different webpages using an address bar. Ex. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox.
HTML: Hypertext mark-up language. The "language" that is used to run to tell your computer how stuff should appear on screen.
URL: Uniform resource locator. A standard address that can take you to a document/webpage. Ex. http://www.whimsicalous.com.
Editor: program used to make HTML documents. Some editors will not require any knowledge of HTML, just clicking and dragging. Ex. Dreamweaver, Notepad, Geocities and Tripod editors.
Domain: the name of the website in the URL. Ex. Whimsicalous in www.whimsicalous.com.
Graphic Program: the program used to make graphics. Ex. Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Gimp
the more complicated stuff
Webmaster/Webmistress: male/female that runs the website.
Meta tags: the tags inserted into your webpages so search engines can list them. Ex. </META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="graphics, hockey, whimsical, whimsicalous, montreal canadiens, canadiens, hockey wallpapers, signatures, hockey photos, hockey layouts, carolina hurricanes"> </META NAME="description" CONTENT="A personal site displaying hockey wallpapers, and other graphics, made by Catherine.">
Hits: the number of people that have visited your website.
Affiliates: becoming friends with another webmaster/webmistress, and linking each other up on each other's sites.
Webrings: a group of sites that are similiar. Everyone in the ring places a code on their site that allows visitors to surf all the other sites in the webring.
Div layer: one of the many layers you'll have on your site. These are used to seperate content or layer it.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol. Used to get files up on the internet for others to see, can be used by typing in your address with ftp in front of it, or through a program. Ex. ftp.whimsicalous.com, SmartFTP.
CSS: Cascading Style Sheet. Making a single document to change all the variables on your site instead of on each individual page.
ALT tag: A description, you can see it when you hold your mouse over a link, or picture.
Page anchor: a link or image on a page that will bring you somewhere else on the same page using a 'codeword'.
SSI/PHP includes: These work like CSS, placing a code on your page that will 'include' another file. Very good for large sites so you don't have to fix the pages independently.
404 error pages: Pages that show up when someone accesses a page that is no longer there. These can be customized.
Hotlinking/Directlinking: taking the link straight of someones site instead of uploading somewhere else. It takes up bandwidth, and is a problem with a lot of website owners.
Iframe: Inline frame. It takes another webpage and displayes it in a small/large frame on a website.
Hex codes: the six digit code pound signal (#) included in HTML to display colours. Ex. #000000 (black).
Javascript: a more interactive way to display webpages.
Java: langauge to make programs that are interactive.
favicon: the little image displayed when a website is bookmarked, or on the left hand corner of the browser.
thumbnails: smaller images that link to larger images.
Image map: using exact codes to place images (usually larger images) together.
Guestbook: a book-like application that people that can sign an leave messages, usually commenting on the site.
Plugboard: a board where a person can submit a link and button to their site and it appears on the board.
Vector: A type of way to make graphics. Using nodules to get sharp, clean lines and easily customizable.
